Quality Engineer

Summary Description: Monitors day-to-day quality activities focusing on root cause analysis to prevent recurrence of quality concerns and/or issues, both internal and external. Provides data support to engineering and operations on the process performance related to quality requirements and expectations. Provides support for the continual improvement of the quality management system focusing on the production process. Works as a liaison between Whitesell Precision Components (WPC) and customers.

Main Expectations of this position are as follows:
- Champion the problem resolution process (8D, etc.) for customer issued concerns in machining, fabrication, and internal to WPC
  • Interfaces directly with the customer
  • Interfaces directly with WPC personnel required for problem resolution
 
- Lead the PPAP process for the machining processes
 
- Perform capability analysis across the machining and fabrication processes on a weekly basis to meet customer print requirements and IATF requirements.
 
- Champion continuous improvement teams based on results of capability analysis.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may include the following - others may be assigned):
  • Develops and initiates standards and methods for inspection, testing, and evaluation.
  • Analyzes corrective and preventive actions to respond to customer complaints.
  • Devises sampling procedures and designs / develops forms and instructions for recording, evaluating and reporting quality and reliability data.
  • Reviews prints with engineering and operations to determine critical characteristics relative to processing and assembly of product.
  • Establishes programs to evaluate the capability of production equipment and testing, measurement, and analytical equipment within the facility.
  • Works directly with Quality Manager to establish, implement and maintain the quality management system.
  • Reviews the production process quality performance on an ongoing basis.
  • Develops procedures and quality methods to reduce and eliminate sorting and non-value added inspections.
  • Ensures timely resolution of supplier non-conformances and effectiveness of submitted corrective actions and preventive actions.
  • Responsible for continual improvement activities to enhance the quality system.
  • Directs operators and machinists engaged in measuring and testing customer’s parts and tabulating data concerning materials, product or process quality, and reliability.
  • Monitors root cause analysis and implementation of corrective action for process related concerns.
  • Conducts training sessions on quality activities and updated work instructions/procedures to build quality awareness.
  • Defines what methods and equipment will be used to measure key quality characteristics of a process.
  • Works directly with customer complaints to allocate resources based on the problem’s source. 
 
  • Works directly with quality technicians to ensure product and processes comply with the relevant requirements of the quality management system and customer specific requirements.
  • Works directly with engineering on specific quality issues including the implementation of any new testing criteria or assembly methods.
  • Uses correct methodology to collect quality data.  Uses data to apply to problem-solving techniques leading to continual improvement.
  • Supports the production process by introducing revisions to quality processes for cost savings.
  • Uses management discretion in decision making with regards to the overall quality management system
  • Monitors and supports quality department ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and access to WPC quality information. 
  • Makes decisions on how to reduce and eliminate quality problems, wherever possible
  • Supports IATF16949, ISO9001, and customer specific requirements through compliance with quality management system.
Requirements:
  • Associates Degree in Quality Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or equivalent with 4 years of  machining experience in an automotive manufacturing environment
  • Experience working within an IATF16949 quality management system
  • Experience in the use and application of statistical process control (mini-tab etc.)
  • Experience in precision metrology
  • ­Computer Literacy including Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Access, and Powerpoint.
  • Excellent Communication Skills.

        While performing the duties of this job the employee will spend a majority of the time on the shop floor walking/standing.  The employee is regularly required to use body movements of moving around the facility, turning the head and torso, reaching, grasping, bending and flexing the arms, legs, wrists, and fingers.  Use of keyboards, typing, and using computer terminals is required activities.  The employee is occasionally required to fly by commercial airline and driving will be required to attend conventions, seminars, and meetings as required.  The employee must be able to handle stress.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception.  Specific hearing and speech abilities required by this job include the ability to hear and have full power of speech.

        Work will generally be on the production floor in a precision machine environment.  Travel throughout the state and nearby states.  The normal auto and air travel hazards will apply.  Work days will be 8–10  hours per day with some early mornings or late evenings required as determined by you for proper completion of your assigned tasks or as determined by the quality manager or WPC management staff.
